Ping G5 Driver Review
The Ping G5 is a classic club, with a 460cc titanium head that’s both powerful and forgiving. Though it’s not the newest model on the market, it’s a good enough club to earn its keep in any golf bag.
Its weight placement is designed to create a high MOI, helping control, stability, and distance. The Ping G5’s internal weighting system moves eight grams of discretionary weight away from the crown and clubface and repositioning it in the sole, changing the center of gravity for higher launch conditions and lower ball spin. Though such design tweaks are common nowadays, this was one of the early adopters of the new approach.
It’s hard to find the Ping G5 new, since the company doesn’t manufacture it any more and it has been replaced in the company’s arsenal by the Ping G10. But anyone who can find it, or who can get a second-hand club in good condition, will get the benefit of an excellent and forgiving driver at a very reasonable cost. It has most of the attributes of the current Ping models, and has the large hitting zone to drive the ball down the fairway and keep it from the rough.
