Wilson Staff Smooth Driver Review
Wilson’s newest entry into the 460-cc clubhead marketplace, the Wilson Staff Smooth driver is an ideal combination of form and function that looks and plays like a masterpiece.
As one might expect from the name, the Wilson Smooth is a sleek, rounded clubhead (unlike the Wilson Spine driver which has – you guessed it – a spine on top of the clubhead). It has a large sweet spot, thanks to the company’s own variable face thickness design that the company says produces a sweet spot twice as wide as a similar club with a constant thickness face.
The engineers also moved weight back in the clubhead, and it moves further back as the loft increases. That maximizes head stability, forgiveness, MOI, and loft conditions. This isn’t a cookie-cutter club; the Wilson Smooth plays differently at the 8.0, 9.0, 10.5 and 12.0 degree of loft versions, to make sure that the club does its users expect.
There’s also a choice of Fujikura shafts, depending on swing type. The E100 series R2 Flex and R Flex are best for golfers with a slower swing, helping launch the ball higher with more spin. Those with a stronger swing may be better off with the S Flex and X Flex in the E300 series, which offer a mid-launch trajectory and less spin to create those laser beams that shoot down the fairway.
Padraig Harrington plays the Wilson Staff Smooth driver, and the three-time major winner has made it look easy off the tee. It’s a club that’s been battle-tested at the highest level, and is a joy for anyone to hit.
